Passion for Art

At Art Lounge with Shekhar Kapur

My love for art first started when I took an elective at university called ‘History of Art I’.  At the time it sounded interesting, but little did I realise that in the future this course would actually throw me into the realms of serious art collecting. I did my course research on ‘Venus throughout time’ (Venus in pre-historic times was very different to her Renaissance counter-part!). And the rest is history as they say.

I loved every part of the fact that art represents so many different things to the artist and it actually is a historical documentation of that period of time. These days you will find me at most art exhibitions in the UAE and in places I travel to – my favourites being the ones that really cross the line in expressionism like Frieze in London.

My hottest buy is the Jamil Naqsh you see in the photo that I bought at Dubai’s Art Lounge. That was the day I met the charming Shekhar Kapur, director of the internationally acclaimed Oscar movie ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’. It truly was an honour meeting Shekhar, and although many people spoke to him about his well-praised movie, I actually caught him off-guard by telling him that I am a big fan of his blog. Yes, quite.

I must add a few words about the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre, a project that I fully endorse. I have been a board member of this fantastic project from 2004 when it was still essentially on paper. Now DUCTAC is up and running and serves all the different communities that make up Dubai. People love coming to DUCTAC to learn dance and art, watch a theatrical production or just browse through the library or art gallery. I truly believe we need community projects such as these to enhance young people’s creativity and innovation.
